There are many different tools for children. From hammers to saws, the selection is vast. At first glance, it's often not so easy to see how the individual tools differ. This overview is intended to help you compare the most important tools and find out which tool is right for your child.

With a Japanese saw, the teeth and the quality of the blade are paramount. A good Japanese saw cuts on the pull stroke, meaning children have more control and can work particularly easily and precisely. The handle should fit comfortably in the hand and ideally be made of wood. For safe sawing, the blade should be sturdy yet flexible enough to make fine cuts. Shorter blades are suitable for children or beginners because they are easier to control.
A small handle makes the saw lighter and easier to handle. Children can guide it more easily and have better control over the cut. The bow of a fret saw should ideally not be much longer than the forearm to begin with. This prevents the saw from hitting the stomach. A longer handle is also heavier, and children tend to use their other hand to hold the handle, often causing it to bind. Working with the smaller fret saw is safer and significantly less frustrating for beginners.
Wooden handles feel warm and pleasant to the touch. They fit better in the hand and are less slippery than plastic. They are also durable and can be sanded or oiled if needed. A tool with a wooden handle often lasts for many years and, as an added bonus, looks nicer.
Because quality, handling, and safety can vary significantly. A cheap tool isn't always the best for children's hands. Comparing different models helps you find out which saw or drill bit really works well and avoids making the wrong purchase. Depending on the intended use and personal habits, a different tool might be more suitable.

Hand drills for children are a classic tool for learning to drill in a playful way.
