Cars are a classic and can be built by children in no time. Of course, the bodies can be customized. But by screwing four wheels onto a sanded piece of wood, a racer can be created in a flash. A small, firmly attached wooden ball can represent the head of the driver. What color should the cool racer be?
Tools required:
- saw
- nail drill or hand drill
- slotted screwdriver
- wood glue
- File/sandpaper
- ruler and pencil
- screw clamp
Small wooden vehicles (racing cars, excavators, trucks, etc.) can be roughly divided into three main parts: hull, wheels, and superstructures.

Work steps:
- Saw the timber for the hull to the desired length.
- Sand/file the hull, possibly chamfer it, create the basic shape
- Determine the position for the wheels
- Pre-drill small holes (approx. 2 mm) using a nail drill or wood spiral drill bit.
- Screw on the wheels
- Design and glue together structures (round rods as lights, nail antenna…)
Tips:
- Drill the holes for the wheels to the same height as possible, so that all wheels are flush
- Always clamp the wood securely while working
- Wooden balls make great racing driver heads
- You can nail the wheels in place, but screws hold better and the wheels turn more easily.
