What is a carving knife used for?

Chip carving knives are only suitable for experienced carvers. With this knife, featuring a short and extremely sharp blade, ornaments, decorations, faces, and letters can be carved into wood.

Extra care is required when handling the carving knife, as the patterns are essentially cut out and a lot of calm and accuracy is needed.

What exactly is a hollow iron?

Gouges are chisels with a semicircular blade. All chisels and gouges are suitable for working wood with a mallet (a type of wooden hammer). You may have seen sculptors use a mallet, striking the end ring of the handle to drive the tip of the chisel blade into the wood, removing material. Depending on the angle at which the gouge or chisel is held, smaller or larger layers of wood shavings are gradually removed in the direction of the grain. The closer the chisel is held to the wood, the less wood is removed. Gouges are used for carving out concave recesses.

And what is a drawknife?

To use a two-handled drawknife or drawbar, you need a carving bench that allows you to work with both hands. Removing the wood layer is done by pulling the drawknife towards you across the clamped piece of wood.
