Our product range includes various hand drills, hand-held drills, and nail drills for pre-drilling screw holes. We also offer a hand drill for on-the-go use, perfect as an addition to your carving knife. Our Werkdachs recommendation is the classic hand drill! Unlike drilling with a cordless screwdriver, the manual drive provides a much better feel for the material being drilled.
There are many ways to drill a hole in a piece of wood. Before the invention of electric drills and cordless screwdrivers, various systems existed, some of which are still available today, while others have been revived. The purely mechanical function allows you to develop a good feel for the material and the drilling process. Unlike with electric drives, your own power is applied directly or via a gear mechanism. Drilling with hand-cranked drills is great fun for most children.
Cordless drills are, of course, ubiquitous these days and indispensable in any workshop. Even though we prefer working with hand-operated tools, using a cordless drill isn't "cheating," but it should be done at a correspondingly low speed and under supervision. It can be quite useful, however, to first gain experience with how much force and stamina are actually needed to drill a hole before resorting to a cordless drill. Furthermore, hand-operated drills are safer to handle and more environmentally friendly.
For drilling larger diameter holes (8mm+), a hand drill is suitable; this can even be operated by two children together. The leverage makes drilling easier. However, with smaller drill bits, children tend to break them because of the strong leverage. In these cases, a countersunk drill bit offers more precise work.
