Files & Rasps

Turning square into round

Are files only for metal, or are there also wood files?

Files are excellent for working with wood and, theoretically, any material softer than the file's steel. Very fine files can easily become clogged with wood fibers; these are better suited for metal. Generally, files can be cleaned with a file brush.

How do you use a file correctly?

A file is used with two hands. The dominant hand grips the handle, also called the tang. The other hand rests flat on the file blade (cut). Material is removed by applying light pressure and moving the file sideways across the wood. Filing against the grain can cause it to break, so it's best to always file with or across the grain. This creates smoother edges and surfaces.
