Respect for nature and the responsible use of its resources are particularly important to us at Werkkiste. In times of mass production and the resulting "throwaway mentality," we therefore focus on sustainability.
In our work, it is important to us to convey a sense of and understanding for our environment and the natural resources we have. We want to raise awareness of the value of things and highlight that not everything has to be thrown away, but can be repaired or reused in other ways.
Working is sustainable
Crafting can help children not only experience the process of making things but also learn to appreciate it. It fosters an awareness of the value of objects. Furthermore, children are much more likely to repair something broken rather than replace it with something new if they have been involved in making it. We also convey this attitude in our courses.
Furthermore, wood, a natural raw material, is a material that children can handle without hesitation, unlike plastics.
What we pay attention to
The Werkkiste premises are located in a low-energy house with a rainwater harvesting system; we use green electricity and exclusively use local or recycled wood for carpentry and joinery in our workshop.
We try to avoid packaging as much as possible, pay attention to the use of recycled cardboard for shipping materials, and reuse boxes multiple times.
In the production and selection of our products, we pay attention to high-quality materials that ideally have ecological certifications and come from the region, within the country, or from neighboring European countries. This minimizes long transport routes and the associated emissions.
